Between the Dark and the Daylight eBook Richard Marsh Reviews
These twelve short stories were published as a collection in 1902. At first glance all they seem to have in common is their author.
A thieving ghost, a conflicted juror, a cross dressing servant, an anti-everything crusader, a clerical plagiarist, a murderous woman scorned, a timid old maid wooed - what do any of these characters have in common?
The editor, however, does a valiant job of relating the tales to each other. The key, he says, lies within the personal history of Marsh, who reinvented himself mid-career. After doing time for defrauding his creditors, Marsh changed his name from Bernard Heldmann to Richard Marsh. He also stopped writing boys adventures stories and embarked upon real literature. A complete identity switch.
Certainly the question of identity looms large in these stories identity lost, stolen, faked, confused, mistaken or brazenly maintained after death. Hypocrites, fraudsters and murderers are unmasked. Courage and genuine goodness are rewarded. And no one is quite exempt from the sting of Marsh's satire.
There are a good number of love stories in the collection, which pleased me. Rich in late Victorian sentiment, they're also subtly unconventional (for their time). The simplest stories offer hidden complexities. Moral dilemmas abound.
Marsh is a consummate storyteller. I was delighted with every story but one, an excellent score. So I do recommend this miscellany - and the thoughtful introduction that attempts to unify it. Another great story collection by Marsh is The Seen and the Unseen.
Not what I was expecting. It was all short stories written in England. Quite boring to say the least. Don't read.
